Justice for Sale

“What the most expensive lawyers available say is legal does indeed (no pun intended) Trump what is moral, and Right big R.” Such is what my retired before he was ready to be Law Professor uncle told me many many times. I can see why you were not able to say who ‘corporation X’ is, or even say that what they were doing to you was ‘illegal’. The reality is that most of us do not have the money, time or manipulative ‘smarts’ to go to court against large corporations who will (according to an innovative, independent and honest biomedical research colleague of mine who attempted this) ‘wear you down’.

It is ironic that the television and streaming broadcasters who rule the airways put on programs where a small business lawyer seeks and GETS justice for unjustifiably hurt or ripped off ‘commoners’ in a court of law. While, of course, getting back his divorced spouse and kids who think that said lawyer should spend more time with family than at work ‘saving the world’. With the music playing in the background played and composed by musicians who get maybe, on a good day, 0.5 percent of the revenue paid by the producer of the film for the rights to that music.

Are there honest lawyers and honest large corporations? Maybe, but more often than not, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Cincinatis in Ancient Rome after he became an effective General stepped down so that civilians who were skilled in keeping people fed rather than military staff who knew how to kill them could take over. George Washington declined being a monarch for life after being the ‘father of his country’ so that the power and opportunity to dispense justice could be passed down to, and be implimented by, ‘the kids’. But, ask yourself…when was the last time you saw someone who got a lot of power use it effectively to serve others rather than to serve themselves?

And as for the legal system we have designed as a species, the first caveman who wrote rules on the walls of his/her dwelling as to who gets to eat the lion’s share of the sabre toothed tiger at dinner, and who has to do the skinning and gathering of firewood—there is NO law which when followed to the letter always results in a moral and just outcome. Every law if implimnented in the wrong cercumstanses will result in moral injustice. This is why we invented lawyers who, unfortunately, have themselves become corporatized. Which in a centralized world interconnected more and more by rapid and easily obtained communication devises, is getting worse.

But…nature never gives you a problem without a solution. And I applaud MTWX.ca for bringing together those who see a need to make a wrong system right again, somehow. Which we CAN and must do by thinking outside the box and coloring outside the lines. Like, I suggest, the way the medical staff portrayed in the TV show MASH did, providing the ‘best care anywhere’. Even though, according to its co-creator Alan Alda (when quoted in the 1990s) ‘MASH could never be produced today. But….it is 2025 now! A new century with new challenges.
